Select Mutism
You may not know it yet, but you could have a child with Select Mutism. I found out when my child was in Senior Kindergarten. This is an extremely dibilitating disorder for a child if it is not caught early in their life. Not many people know what this is, I am trying to get this information out to people the best way I can. This is something your child is born with, you will think your child is extremely shy at first, until you run into problems, where they won't talk to their teachers or any other adults, they basically freeze if asked to perform or say something in front of someone, this also includes asking them to say please and thank you. It is heart breaking to watch these children struggle with the fear of talking. They cannot help this, it is not something they can control. Many people don't understand this and think that the child is being stubborn, or rude. The child will also cover up their work, not wanting anyone to see, they have fears of going to the washroom at school, as they don't want anyone to see them. They have a fear of being seen doing anything. Select Mutism is usually rated from 1 - 10, this means that a child could fall anywhere between this, some are much worse than others. There are not many resources out there for this, and not many people willing to help, especially schools. This is because it is not understood at schools and they really don't know what to do. Helping your child with Select Mutism is a very slow process, it will take a lot of patience and a lot of understanding. My child is going into grade 2 this year and although she is still not talking to teachers or adults, she has certainly come a long way from how she was 2 years ago. She has a smile on her face most of the time, even when teachers talk to her, compared to how she used to react this is a huge step. I am trying to find as many resources as possible to help her with this and to also help others be more aware of this. There are 1 in every 1000 children who has this, that is a lot of children, many that go through life unnoticed. Later in life this could cause the child to drop out of high school, turn to alchol and drugs, and maybe even turn to suicide. We have to take this seriously as no one else will, so parents who read this and think that they may have a child with any of the symptoms I have mentioned, please seek some further advice and don't be scared to ask, you could be saving your child from going through much heartache. Take Care Good Luck I would be interested to hear from anyone who has any questions or advice. |
