A fear you can't get over by facing.
To anyone who thinks that a fear of talking is something that you can get over in a week, a month or even a year, please read the following. This is called Selective Mutism which you can read about in my earlier post. If you suffer with this or you have a child who suffers with this, and you are getting frustrated because nothing is working. Please rememer this is an anxiety disorder, it is something that is going to take time, and A LOT of PATIENCE,think of it like having a child not being able to walk and having to be in a wheelchair, you would never dream of asking them to get up and walk, This is just the same, I know it's not easy, I struggle every day with my 7 year old daughter, it's now two years since she was diagnosed with Select Mutism. The teachers are not aware of what this is, there is not enough resources out there, it is going to be up to you to find the information and to make that information available to your childrens teachers. There are books available, I pass the same book on to each teacher every school year so as the teacher will understand from the beginning. I print out the most important points of Selective Mutism, like what it is and how teachers can help. One of the biggest fears that my child has is going to the washroom, I know she can't ask and so at the beginning of each year I make sure that I talk to the teacher and that there is a system set up so that she won't have to ask to go to the washroom. This may sound like something small, but it's huge to her. REMEMBER the more you push them the more you push them back, you CAN NOT make them talk, they have to be able to do this in their own time and they will do it when they feel comfortable. There is light at the end of the tunnel, I am still waiting for my child to talk to her teachers, but what I will tell you is that she is a different child from two years ago. She used to be very angry, very sad, and would not look at anyone when they talked to her. She now understands her problem, she knows it's not her fault, she knows that her teacher isn't going to make her talk, she feels comfortable in her surroundings, and she is a very happy child. To me that is all that matters. There are no help groups out there and this is why I have chosen to try to give as much information as possible, in any which way I can.
